Really? How will Jits make me a better person?
Jiu-Jitsu is a full-body workout that engages every muscle group, improves cardio, enhances coordination & agility, and will generally push your body to its absolute physical limits. While these health benefits are obvious, long-term practitioners will tell you there’s many more benefits than just fitness.
People find BJJ builds their self-confidence, discipline, and general resilience in life like few other activities can. BJJ is HARD. It will push you physically, mentally, and emotionally. After working through these challenges on the mat, most people find their ‘normal’ life to be much, much, easier to deal with. Indeed, you’ll regularly hear people say things like “BJJ is the only thing that keeps me sane on a day-to-day basis”.
Last, Jiu-Jitsu builds your community and personal relationships. Because you always need a partner to practice, Jiu-Jitsu is inherently a team sport. You work together. You build together. Your wins become your team’s wins, and their wins become yours. Everyone grows together. Through this process, you meet interesting new people & make lifelong friendships that you would’ve never otherwise. This larger community aspect of BJJ is one of the things that Jerry loves most!

Why BJJ at Washington Judo Academy?
At the Washington Judo Academy, our BJJ program is taught by Black Belt professor Jerry Tindall. More than just a skilled BJJ player, Jerry has a long history of coaching, mentoring, and teaching physical sports which makes him exceptional at communicating the fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu. Specializing in no-gi for the past 19+ years, Jerry’s game is a unique combination of old-school Jiu-Jitsu and modern wrestling that focuses primarily on strong positional control from both top and bottom positions. This style makes him extremely well-rounded and his grappling broadly applicable.
A life-long student of the grappling game, Jerry is also a regular in our adult Judo classes. He leads by example and encourages people to cross-train between different grappling disciplines as often as possible.
In my work life I coach elite professional athletes so while I started Jiu Jitsu for fun, high-level technique is important to me. Jerry has been a great teacher and coach these last 6 years. He has an expert level understanding about every facet of the sport, and a unique ability to tailor it specifically to you and your Jiu Jitsu.
